PNFS Path Checkers

Margaret Manning and Salle Dare met the officers of the Peak and Northern Footpath Society (PNFS) in 2019 and agreed that the Area wanted to work more closely with them on footpath work so as not to duplicate work, but also to try and overcome the many gaps that exist.

PNFS has developed a system, called Path Checkers, for reporting Rights of Way problems:

  1. From a smart phone, using an App.

  2. By email.

  3. By filling in a form on the PNFS website.

You can get full details from the Path Checkers page of the PNFS website http://www.peakandnorthern.org.uk/pathcheckers/

When a report is sent in, one of the PNFS Inspectors will investigate, inform the Highway Authority so that they can take action, and report back on progress.

Coronavirus Impact

Although PNFS are not sending out inspectors during the crisis, they are reporting problems to the relevant Highway Authority and have had some success, often alongside the Ramblers, in dealing with issues, often caused by a few farmers acting unreasonably.

Although Ramblers members are not able to go out and walk the hills and countryside as we would like, we will still be using Rights of Way in our localities and may come across problems.

When we can go further afield we may find more Rights of Way where vegetation has overgrown, due to lack of use, and other problems due to neglect if not deliberate action by landowners.

Footpath Improvement in Redisher Wood

In a collaborative project involving East Lancs LDWA, Bury Council and the Ramblers, the southern end of a path through Redisher Wood (Ramsbottom) has been improved by staircasing. For details, see the link on the Events page, or click here.
